Play Day at Kay Park

Play Day at Kay Park

It was a dull day. The sky was covered by dark clouds that threatened rain. And, yet, surprisingly, the rain did not come.

Kay Park was effervescent with festive activity. It was the annual Play Day. Stalls and gazebos from various companies and organizations attracted a lively crowd. I had got off the train from Glasgow at Kilmarnock railway station and caught a cab that drove me to the park.

I had strolled along the green landscape filled with human activity, past  the colorful gazebos until I reached my destination, the Kilmarnock Active Travel Hub which was located next to a karaoke stands; and Deafening music from the 80s and 70s blasted from the speakers around which a crowd of teenages had gathered.

A miniature circuit had been set up to give children the experience and thrill of cycling while parent watched with pride and glee.

Some of the children embraced the occasion with gusto, racing through the lane while others, more timid or less adventurous, displayed wariness in their attempt. And, curiously, documenting the event was the closest thing to doing sport photography that I have ever got.

A little far away, there was another closed circuit where everyone could ride cycles machines of all sort whose contraptions, somehow, reminded me of the wacky races cartoon.

The clouds were heavy with rain and, at last, at the end of the even, when organisers were wrapping up, it finally poured.
