Walking Together for Memory and Hope

On Friday, February 9th, I had the privilege of covering the Alzheimer Scotland walk at Dean Castle, an event that brought together the local community in support of a vital cause.

The walk was organized by the Kilmarnock Active Travel Hub, a charity dedicated to encouraging walking and cycling as sustainable, healthy ways to move around the town. Their mission is not just about promoting active travel, but also about fostering connections, improving well-being, and making Kilmarnock a more vibrant, accessible place.

For me, this event carried an extra layer of meaning, as it marked one of my first experiences volunteering with the Hub since I joined them earlier this year. Being part of the team has given me the chance to engage more deeply with the community and to witness firsthand how something as simple as a walk can create moments of joy, companionship, and awareness.

Dean Castle’s grounds, with their winding paths and woodland scenery, provided the perfect backdrop for the day. Despite the chill of early February, the atmosphere was warm with conversation, laughter, and a shared sense of purpose. Participants of all ages came together, whether walking in memory of loved ones or simply to show support, reminding me that community spirit is often found in the small but meaningful steps we take together.
