It was a cool Sunday afternoon of late October and as the train dashed through the countryside towards Inverkip, it seemed to me as if the cold front had already arrived in Inverclyde. As it were, days had shortened and, even though it was mid afternoon, the deep azure of the sky was tinged with the ochre hues.
