The day set in overcast sky and forceful gales which preyed upon the land. I had joined the weekly Inverclyde Ramblers Saturday walk which, that particular morning, was only of three of us members.

A full year has elapsed since last winter. The benefit of the winter hour is that the sunset comes early and it is the time when I like to roam on my bicycle along the Clyde, carrying my photo gear with me (a large format Linhof camera, a light meter, a tripod and 4×5 inch film).

The hills were coated with the the lush green of moist grass, among which the heath shrubs burst with the bright pink hue of their blooming flowers that competed with the emerald waves. Here and there, if one tended to look carefully, blueberries could be seen, dark, ripe and with the promise of sweet nectar. Naked granite rock showed on the crest of hills, their motley and rough texture chiseled by the erosion of time and the persecuting assaults of the weather.

While the isolation of the Greenock Cut visitor center contributed, in no small measure, to the charm that was wont to leave its imprint on the Human mind, it might be easily imagined that its remote location, along with the intemperance of the elements in this part of the country, would inevitably dampen the enthusiasm of anyone who would like to visit it, and especially so for someone who lacked a mean of transportation.
